Squash BC’s Provincial Training Squad had their second Training Camp of the season earlier this month. The Camp was an action-packed weekend of training for BC’s top junior squash players at the Richmond Olympic Oval and Sport Central. The Squad has been working with high performance training staff at the Richmond Oval this season
and last, in an effort to enhance their overall development as high performance athletes. The sessions at the Oval have included strength and conditioning sessions in the gym; recovery and regeneration sessions; yoga and team building activities; and regular physical testing so the athletes can monitor their individual progression in power, agility and endurance.
All of the players on the Squad have reached the top 10 nationally in their age category, and some have achieved a #1 national ranking, nonetheless they are all striving for more. At this Camp the players had the opportunity to learn from squash coaches Shakiru Matti, Marco Toriz and Hamid Khosrowkiani about what it will take to get to the next level in their squash. The focus on getting to the next level included discussions about how to approach training and competing both physically and mentally, and getting on court to put words into action with some new drills and getting some real-time tips and feedback from the coaches. Here are a few comments from some of the Camp participants:
“The on-court sessions were intense and focused – no nonsense and really good feedback. Would love to have these coaches at future camps”. “The squash drills that we did were really engaging”. “The coaches did a really good job of giving me useful feedback”. “The sessions were intense and I felt tired but satisfied by the end of the camp”
The athletes on the Provincial Training Squad would like to thank Squash BC for organizing and subsidizing this Camp, the coaches for their expert insight and guidance, and Sport Central for hosting the Camp.
