BC Athletes are Crowned Champions at NKF Devencore 2017 Canadian Junior Squash Championships

Three British Columbia junior squash players won national titles on Sunday at the 2017 Canadian Jr National Championships at the Hollyburn Club in West Vancouver.

In an amazing all British Columbia final, Michael Mehl defeated Ryan Picken (11-2, 11-4, 11-13, 11-4) to win his third consecutive U19 Boys title. Mehl who attends the Shawnigan Lake School on Vancouver Island lost only one game in the entire tournament. Picken had a terrific tournament without dropping a game until he faced the hard-hitting Mehl in the final.

Lucia Bicknell seeded #1 in U15 Girls dominated the competition without losing a game in the entire tournament. Molly Chadwick from Ontario put up a strong fight in the final with the final game going extra points but Bicknell was able to close it out 12-10 to win the National title.

Earlier in the day, Jacob Zihao Lin thrilled the capacity crowd at Hollyburn Country Club defeating Alexander Yuzpe the #1 seed from Ontario in a hard-fought final (11-8, 11-7,9- 11,11-7).

Over 200 athletes from across Canada converged at the Hollyburn Country Club for the four day tournament. Tournament organizer, Jeff Boag, and his team at the Hollyburn Club put on an impressive performance for the many fans from across Canada who filled the stands for the tournament.

Sponsors of the tournament were also pleased with the large crowds throughout the week including Jon Bishop, the Executive VP and Managing Principal for NKF Devencore, the title sponsor: “It was an amazing tournament and a unique opportunity to watch matches played by the best U19 squash players in Canada.  Great venue at Hollyburn Country Club and very well managed event. NKF Devencore was thrilled to be involved and look forward to supporting this level of play on the West Coast in the future.”
