HELP SUPPORT SQUASH IN WHISTLER!

We are at a crucial stage with the proposed new squash & tennis club in Whistler and really need your help. It's do or die so we hope we live to die another day!

We need as many letters sent to Whistler's Mayor & Council supporting squash (instructions below). If you can only send a couple of lines that's fine as the more the merrier and short is good!

Here is a brief summary of the current situation:

** it is important to note that this is not a tennis vs squash issue- the developer has expressed his opinion that he doesn't think squash is worth including, but the tennis committee has been very supportive and in fact are the ones who called me to get help drum up some support for squash** Our job is to convince council that squash deserves to be included in the new facility.

The Holborn Group wants to develop some condos near the current tennis club. In order to get the zoning to do so, they have offered to replace the current tennis club with a 'World Class Racquets Facility'. Their current proposal looks great, but does not include squash courts, nor does it have a suitably sized fitness facility. They made this presentation to council at the last meeting to try and get approval, but they didn't get the approval to go ahead with the development in its current format as there were some issues on the size of the hotel to be built, the setbacks and also the fact that there aren't any squash courts in the plan. The next step is that a public open house is held (Aug 30th, Spruce Grove Field House), then council considers the community's input & decides what the developer needs to do in order to qualify to get the zoning. So, in a nutshell, we need to convince council that squash should be included and that we need a proper fitness facility.

Instructions on writing a letter to Mayor & Council:

  1. E-mail mayorsoffice@whistler.ca& bcc whistlersquash@yahoo.com
  2. E-mail must contain must contain contact information, including full name, mailing address, email address and telephone number.
  3. Points to include:
  • I fully support having 4 squash courts at the proposed new racquets facility
  • I would be very interested in using these facilities on a non-resident member basis and it would greatly add to my family's experience in Whistler
  • I think the facility also needs to have a proper fitness facility, proper change rooms and should be finished to a high standard
  • I am excited about the potential to play in larger tournaments in Whistler and would travel to Whistler to do so
  • I am exited about the potential to come and watch professional squash tournaments in Whistler

The letter should be short & to the point- 2 paragraphs is perfect! I was going to do a form letter to cut & paste, but I think personalized letters have much more impact and I know you guys can find the time to help out!

The public open house is Wed Aug 30th from 3:00-7:00 at Spruce Grove Field House in Whistler, so if you are up here we'd love to see you there. I'd also like to thank Viktor Berg for coming up to play an exhibition with me that night. Thanks Vik!

Thanks so much & I look forward to seeing at the new Club in Whistler!
