The BC Closed Championships were played on March
1st through the 5th. Arbutus Club did a fine job of hosting the
event and it’s always a pleasure to play in a tournament
there. At the dinner on Saturday night the Squash BC annual awards
were handed out to very deserving recipients.
The Jack Larson Trophy is awarded for all round contribution
to, and the development of squash in B.C. This years winner of
the Jack Larson Trophy is Tim Saunders. Tim has done a bunch of
different things in different areas of squash. He coaches, he
organizes, he volunteers enormous amounts of time, he promotes
squash in both senior and juniors. In fact he has one of the largest
and most successful junior programs in the province. He owns a
club, he’s been on the board of Squash BC for around 10
– 15 years, (time seems to run together after awhile,) and
while on the board he was always a junior zone rep and part of
the time a senior zone rep, he was the junior committee chair
for many years and he was the president of Squash BC. We think
he’s contributed.
The Ernie Rogers Bowl is presented for best international and
national play. Lorrie Baildham was chosen for this award for obvious
reasons. In the past year she won the Nationals in her age group,
and in Edmonton last summer won the World Masters Squash Championships
in her age group. She’s been nominated for Sport BC’s
master athlete of the year award and won Nanaimo’s master
athlete the year award.
The John Burris Memorial Award is presented annually to a squash
play who demonstrates sportsmanlike conduct both on and off the
court. Eng Khoon Chua is a gentleman on and off the court. Win
or lose he does it with grace and style.
There are other annual awards that can be handed out but we didn’t
receive any nominations for these awards. Squash BC encourages
all members to become involved and let us know about deserving
individuals in the squash community.
