Squash BC’s Annual
Awards
On Saturday night at the BC Closed, Squash BC presented
their annual awards to some very worthy individuals. Every year
we send out nomination forms for the various categories and we
are getting more back every year.
The awards and what they are for and who has won them in the
past can be viewed at (click
here.) These awards have a very long history and tradition
in BC. There is the Presidents Plate for being a great supporter
of squash. The Ernie Rogers Bowl is for best national and international
play. The John Burris Memorial Trophy for Sportsmanship is fairly
obvious. The Jack Larson award is for all round contribution to,
and the development of squash in B.C.
The Presidents Plate was awarded
to Diane Grady. Diane has worked many years around Vancouver coaching,
officiating, running tournaments, and filling in on league teams
when there’s a chance they may fold. Many of you won’t
know Diane but she is one of those people who are there when you
need her and she does the job in a quiet and very competent way.
If you look behind the scenes, she will be there. Congratulations
Diane and thank you for everything you’ve done for squash.
The
Ernie Rogers Bowl was won by Carolyn Russell. Carolyn
had a great year with winning the Nationals last May, competing
in the Women’s Worlds in Edmonton in September and entering
many WISPA tournaments throughout the year. Internationally, Carolyn
has been consistently in the top 50 in the world for the last
6 months and has been actively playing the women’s professional
tour since 2001. She is currently ranked #45 in the world and
is the 2nd highest ranked Canadian on the tour. Congratulations
Carolyn and thank you for representing BC.
The
John Burris Memorial Trophy for Sportsmanship was won by
a very worthy individual, Melanie Jans. John
was a person for whom integrity, honesty and loyalty went hand
in hand. On the court, he did not take any rallies off! Melanie
is exactly the same. As Andrew said in his write up, “you
can never tell if Melanie won or lost.” We are all striving
to be like that and with some hard work, we may make it.
The
Jack Larson award for all round contribution was awarded
to Mark Heaney. Mark has been around the squash
scene for many years in BC. Mark grew up playing squash in BC.
He played at an open level throughout the 80’s, early 90’s
and then moved to primarily playing doubles to this day. Mark
has been on many doubles committees, organized dozens of doubles
tournaments and has been a great contributor to squash in BC.
We thank you for all you’ve done for squash and congratulations
on winning this award.
