The Squash BC Closed Provincial
Championships
Another Provincial Championships is in the books.
The first weekend of March saw people come from all over BC to
participate in Squash BC’s premier event of the year. Over
150 players pulled out their A game to see who would become provincial
champions in their category.
The Championships were hosted at The Arbutus Club and they did
a superb job with no little detail being overlooked. Squash BC
would like to thank Jim Green, Larry Armstrong, Nancy Bullus,
Ron McCaffrey, the volunteer committee, The Arbutus Club and its
staff for making this year’s championships one to remember.
All the participants were made to feel welcome and at home. This
is not an easy thing to do for some clubs when we all invade their
club for a weekend. The Arbutus Club pulled it off with ease and
dignity. Thank you.
The weekend went well with the majority of matches being played
at The Arbutus Club. A few were scheduled at Vancouver Lawn and
we thank them for the use of their courts. There were some incredible
matches in all categories throughout the tournament. The only
notable no shows were the eight juniors who were up in Whitehorse
representing BC at the Canada Winter Games. We didn’t hear
too many complaints from the adults on that one.
On Saturday night, The Arbutus Club put on a wonderful spread
for the Squash BC Awards banquet. (More on the awards later.)
After the awards were handed out and a great dinner consumed,
a casino night was organized. Everybody played for Arbutus Bucks
which you could then buy raffle tickets to go in a draw for some
really great prizes. As with most gambling, some did well, others
not so well. People did stay till the wee hours of the morning
and all seemed to have a very good time.
The final matches were played Sunday afternoon. (The BC Champions
and Runner-ups are listed below.) Probably the match of the day
went to Carolyn Russell and Melanie Jans. These two have played
each other so often they can read each other like a book. There
was incredible shot making and an all out gutsy performance from
both players. Carolyn narrowly edged out Melanie, 9-7 in the 5th
with the match taking an hour and twenty minutes. Great match.
Squash BC would like to congratulate all the players who played
in the Championships for giving it their all. We would also like
to point out the behaviour was a beautiful thing to watch. While
there were appeals to referee’s calls, they were done in
a civil manner and then play resumed. Last year we had many complaints
about player’s behaviour on court, this year, none. Thank
you to all those who are changing and making this sport a great
sport to play and watch.
Squash BC would like to thank the following sponsors for making
this event possible. Quizam, Lululemon, Dunlop, Buntain Insurance,
Rogers Group Financial, Matt Fahey, Soren Rasmussen, Stanley Dee,
Jim Green. Without our sponsors, squash could not exist. Please
support them as they support you.
