2004 INVITATIONAL WEST
COAST JUNIOR SQUASH TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS
BC sent 33 players to the Inaugural "West Coast Junior Squash
Team Championships" hosted by The Seattle Athletic Club May
7-9th. The event, organized by Tim Saunders, Shabana Khan, and Shennie
Bhaloo, comprised 8 teams; one from North Vancouver, Vancouver,
two from South Vancouver, two from Seattle, one from Portland, and
one from California. Each team included the area's top 6 Juniors
along with a U23 Playing Coach and a Managing Coach.
Play commenced Friday evening with a series of 7 round robins, one
for each position which was used to seed the teams for a triple
knockout Tournament played over Saturday and Sunday. The first series
of team matchups was played Saturday morning and proved that the
goal of 'team parity' had been achieved with the # 7 seed Vancouver
South 'A' (Paul King) team defeating the # 2 seed Seattle 'A' (Azim
Khan) team 14-10 and the 8th seed Vancouver South '1' (Tim Saunders)
team narrowly losing 12-9 games to the # one seed Portland (Khalid
Mir) team. Other matchups included the 4th seed Seattle '1"
(Shabana Khan) team over the # 5 seed Vancouver (Shennie Bhaloo)
team 14-10, and the #3 North Vancouver (Sue Foster) team beating
# 6 California (Farhad Ettahad) 15-11. Main round semi-finals saw
Portland defeating Seattle '1' 12-9 and South Vancouver 'A' besting
North Vancouver by the narrow margin of 13-12 games. Meanwhile in
the consolation the South Vancouver '1' team got past the Vancouver
team 13-11 to meet California who beat the Seattle A team 14-10.
Sunday all 8 teams had one final match up to determine the final
results. In the 7/8 game Seattle A beat Vancouver 15-11, while California
defeated South Vancouver 16-13. In the 3/4 game Seattle 1 took the
bronze medal over Vancouver 15/11, while Portland made it a clean
sweep for the US Teams beating the South Vancouver 'A' team 17-10.
This years rules allowed up to two "spares" per team,
to ensure close competition across the board and enabled an extra
five keen BC players; 2 from Vancouver and 3 from Victoria to fill
openings in the Seattle and California teams. Next year this will
be tightened up to only one "spare", as the Americans
proved to be stronger than anticipated, winning all 4 final matchups.
The 2005 competition will be hosted by the 'Pro Club' in Bellevue.
Plans are to increase the event from 8 to 12 teams in 2005, with
invitations going back out to Alaska, the Yukon, The Interior/Northern
BC, and Vancouver Island.
