Government Cutbacks Could Affect Squash
BC
Squash BC has a responsibility to keep its members
and supporters informed of significant changes that could affect
the sport of Squash in BC. As in many cases, the provincial government
is not giving any lengthy advance warnings as to what cuts are
coming and where it could take place. Squash BCs government
funding comes from two main government sources, one being a straight
grant and the other by accessing gaming funds. The Provincial
Sport Organizations in BC were lead to believe that funding would
remain unchanged over the next two years. This was almost immediately
followed by the rumor that access to gaming funds has been shut
down and is currently in a frozen state. At this time we are unable
to get any reliable answers from the gaming commission or other
government contacts. The bottom line is that the dollar amount
in question for Squash BC is approximately $40,000. This is a
significant amount because it represents about 20% of our budget.
Needless to say we are hoping that this is only a rumor and that
access to gaming funds will continue to be available to us. It
is important that we be responsible during this situation and
take whatever necessary precautions we must to in order to maintain
a strong and healthy organization. I have met with the Executive
Committee on the subject and will be meeting with the rest of
Board this fall.
HOW WILL THIS AFFECT YOU?
Whats likely to happen is this. Squash BC will maintain
the maximum amount of general services as possible to the individual
members and facility members. This will include the Website, which
we have worked hard at developing for the benefit of our members,
Coaching and Officiating courses, the rankings, the insurance
program etc. In other words, programs that service the masses
will not be affected. The programs that may be affected are the
ones where fewer people benefit. These would include Provincial
Teams, travel assistance, provincial tours and things like that.
I want to stress that, for now this is a precautionary move. If
access to Gaming funds gets back on track, we are likely to go
back to a business as usual state. We appreciate your
cooperation and support through these times.
