BC Doubles News

Welcome to the BC Doubles Squash News

BC Doubles is going to be planning a number of aggressive initiatives to try and promote an increased participation of current and new players in the game of doubles and the events hosted through out the year.

As many current doubles players know, Brian Covernton is "Mr. Doubles" in BC for the past… well forever since BC Doubles was formed, more then 15 + years. Commitment well beyond the call of normal duty and for that he should be commended for all his efforts.

A few individuals have finally decided to give Brian a hand in promoting the game in BC. A committee has been formed in order to try and breath some life back into the game, encourage new players to the game (especially juniors) and increase the participation in the year's doubles events. The committee has it stands now consists of:

Marvin Mizinski - BC Doubles chairperson
Brian Covernton - Past chairperson
Mark Heaney - Board member
Lynn Broman - Board member
Kelsey Parsons - Board member
Scott Kidd - Board member
Bob Smart - Board member
John Osburn - Board member
Tony Goodson - Board member

If anybody would like to participate please do not hesitate to contact myself, any of the board members or send us an email at doubles@squashbc.com

Some of the issues the board will address with the initiation of new strategies and policies will be:

  1. The aging population of players currently playing in league and tournaments. You know things are pretty sad when an "open event" match played last season had the youngest player on the court coming in at 42 yes that's 42! We will look for ways to introduce new and more importantly younger players to not only play the game but participate in tournaments as well.
  2. We will look at what can be done to introduce the game to players of non-doubles clubs facilities.
  3. Funding is going to be an issue in the near future, as BC Doubles made a significant contribution to the ChILD Pro Doubles Event. With very limited funding the effectiveness of its programs would now be limited. Funding would be used to promote the game, generate prize money for all divisions in select events and use the funds to promote BC player participation in Vancouver and out of province events as well.

The policies and strategies that will address these issues will be formulated and discussed by the board and then posted to the BC Doubles News link for suggestion and comment by the playing public.

We invite all squash players to not only visit our web site often but to provide any comments or suggestions to promote this great game.

Thank you,

Marvin Mizinski
