Mizinski comes from behind twice to win 2 events at the 6th Annual Summer Doubles Tournament

A record 67 competitors representing 47 teams competed in the 6th Annual Summer Doubles tournament at Evergreen Squash Club, July 15 - 20th. Marv Mizinski knows how to pick them as his partner , Brian Covernton , carried them on to victory in the Mens Open finals over Steve Lawton and Ingus Silgailus over-points in the fifth. Ditto in the mixed Open finals as Marv's partner, Alicia Haneine, carried them to a victory over the crowd favorites of Frances Frost and Mark Heaney, 3-1.

The Women's final was also exciting as Nicola Martin and Michele Smith beat out Alicia Haneine and Annette Soane, 3-2 However, the story on the womens side was the last minute teaming up of Paddy Penn and Cia Van Horne beating the number 2 seeds, Frances Frost and Lynn Johansen, 3 -2 first round after being down 11-4 in the fifth!

Another great effort was in the Div 1 play as the new team of Greg Cruikshank and Jason Del Vicario making it through 3 grueling rounds (they were down match point 4 times!) before losing 3- 2 to Richard Martin and John Osburn in the finals. Since John Osburn has now won every Div 1 event we have put on, he is now officially banned from Div 1 play and must play in his age group ( 60+) or Mens Open if he wants to play. It is just not fair to our younger participants.

A good time was had by all as there was also a record amount of alcohol consumed: 2 kegs, 16 cases of beer, 6 bottles of wine and who knows how many margaritas Friday night!

Also, we included another event: the Grouse Grind Challenge for CHILD on Friday night that attracted 28 competitiors. It was a great success and it will now be an annual addition to our Summer Doubles Tournament. Thanks to Richard & Lynn Dustan for organizing this event.

I would like to thank the sponsors: Tree Brewing Company; Freybe Sausage; Freightlink; Credential Direct; Gary Bombay/ CHILD; Mike Bell-Irving; John Smart Investments; Ping; Capilano Suspension Bridge and Squash BC.

Also, the volunteers of: Marv Mizinski; Richard Dustan; Lynn Dustan; Kevin Johnson; Beryl Johnson; Cia Van Horne; and last but not least, Scott and Jane Sibley for a terrific house party on Saturday night.

We are very pleased that the Junior's participated in two events for the first time in this national tournament. The Junior 16 and under had six (6) teams and was won by Calgary's David Letourneau / Keith Pritchard, who defeated Evergreen's Shane Sibley / Ryan Herden.

In Division I, we had two 19 + under Junior teams along with Mason Trafford and his father Geoff. As the tournament evolved, we had 1 ½ Junior teams in the finals of Division I with Jordan King / Grant Bergman defeating the Trafford clan 3 - 1.

It was great to see the Juniors out playing Doubles Squash and enjoying the comraderie that is synonymous with Doubles Squash. A special thank you to the Harrow Racquets for sponsoring the Junior player's packages.

Saturday night's social saw Michael Jackson M.C. a great evening of dining, entertainment by the Comedy Company, dancing to Hour Glass and a silent auction, that will see proceeds directed to junior doubles programs and Squash B.C.'s 2020 Vision Fund. We thank all for contributing and supporting this tournament and its objectives.

The tournament committee would like to thank all the sponsors, contributors, advertisers, patrons and volunteers for making this national event a success and a special thank you to VanCity Savings, Head Racquets, Squash B.C., ADPRO, Freybe's, Vroom and Black Knight.
