Western Canadian's "Doubles
Rookie of the Year" Carolyn Russell
Carolyn could have
made it a double victory at the 2004 Western Canadian Doubles
Championships, held Nov 16 - 21st. However her Mixed Doubles partner,
Courtney Davies, did not bank on the fact they would ever make
it to the finals. So he claimed to have made a Sunday business
commitment ... on the day of Grey Cup ... nasty. A partnership
made in ... for sure! After beating the 2nd seeds Kevin Johnson
and Cathy Covernton in the semis on Saturday, she was forced to
default. Given a second chance, Kevin and Cathy played a terrific
finals and beat an "old" partner (Mark 'Pork Chop"
Heaney) and a "current" one (Francis Frost) 17-16 in
the 5th! After surviving at least two match points, no less. There
could have been more but Mark and Francis were unavailable for
comment after the tragic loss.
Carolyn did manage to find a partner who could play on Sunday.
Teaming with Nicola Martin, the ladies won the Women`s finals
by beating top seeds Francis Frost and Cathy Covernton. Carolyn
finished off the weekend by winning the top raffle prize at the
Wine & Cheese award presentations. The prize, a free doubles
membership at Evergreen Squash Club.
It was another great event with 86 entries representing 62 teams.
